BC Food Safety Stakeholders Group Regional Workshop

Dear Members of the BC Food Safety Stakeholders Group, the BC Food Industry and Support Services:

Your BC Food Safety Stakeholders Group has decided to hold a third Regional Workshop. Previous workshops were held on November 29th in Nanaimo, BC and January 10th in Kelowna, BC.

The third workshop will be held in partnership with the BC Food Protection Association and will be held on March 7th, 2013 at the Newlands Golf & Country Club, 21025 - 48th Avenue, Langley, BC. Some adjustment was made to the agenda for the third workshop due to speaker availability, but we hope all agree that the program includes a great line up of speakers and relevant food safety topics.

Should costs prevent you from attending the 9th Annual North American Summit on Food Safety in Toronto on the same date, then here is your affordable option close to home! An Event Brochure and Program are now available for download. Please take the time to review this information and pass on to friends and colleagues interested in food safety. Early Bird registration for this event will be offered at the more than reasonable fee of $59. The Early Bird rate will close on March 2nd at which time you will still be able to register at the still very reasonable cost of $79!

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. To register for this event please take advantage of the online registration link. We recommend registering early to avoid disappointment as it is anticipated that this event will sell out!

We will be providing space for a limited number of display tables for a fee of $150; this will NOT include the registration for any person(s) attending the display. Each person attending the display will be required to pay the registration fee for individuals. Prior to March 2nd this will be $59 and after March 2nd it will increase to $79.

If you are interested in this opportunity to feature your products and services in front of members of the BC food industry, please contact Peter Taylor at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . For those indicating interest, Peter will return you a PayPal invoice for the registration fee for your display table. Those attending the display are required to register separately at:

We welcome any contributions for door prizes, enclosures for attendee workshop packages or sponsorship of a portion of the day’s events. If you are interested in any of these options to promote your organization to members of the BC food industry please let me know.

Traceability for Small- and Micro-Scale Businesses

February 26 and 27, 2013 | Hotel Delta Beausejour, Moncton NB

Markets are increasingly demanding that suppliers have a traceability system in place, especially for food products. However, the benefits of being able to trace goods are not limited to food products. Unfortunately, off-the-shelf traceability systems are typically too costly in both time and money, for small- and micro-scale businesses.

The objective of this workshop is to provide an overview of the tools and systems available to small- and micro-scale businesses. Participants will learn how to identify what information to record (i.e. what information is required versus that which can be considered ‘nice-to-have’). There will also be presentations on scale-appropriate traceability systems and the tools that can be used in support of the systems. Examples of digital tools etc. will be on display and participants will have the opportunity to discuss their use.

Who should attend

Small businesses looking to establish a traceability system regardless of their product line(s) can benefit from this session. It will be especially valuable to small- and micro-enterprises involved in the collecting, farming and processing of food, and non-traditional forest products aka Non-Timber Forest Products.
